In Love with the process of “Learning”...
and My Wish to the Goddess of Knowledge and Wisdom
Dear penpal,
Let me take you through a beautiful tradition of my diverse country India, especially the state called West Bengal, that honours gaining knowledge and wisdom.
India, a vast subcontinent, boasts a rich tapestry of cultures and languages across its 29 states. I come from a place considered one of the most romantic, and my mother tongue is hailed as the sweetest language in India, with love poems in my language resonating with romance.
On the 14th of February 2024, something unique unfolded for us Bengali Indians. Beyond the well-known Valentine's Day festivities (thanks to the ever-growing influence of capitalism), it was also Saraswati Puja – a day dedicated to worshiping the Goddess Saraswati, the embodiment of knowledge, wisdom, and music.
This divine figure is pure white, with a dazzling white swan as her symbolic companion. White, symbolizing holiness, is believed to be the essence of knowledge.
On this special day, students across the region pray not only for academic success but also for musical prowess, holiness, and good character.
We put books, musical instruments, laptops (in recent days) and pens and pencils near her feet, dedicating ourselves to the goddess asking for humility and pray for wise and enriched lives.
Yet, did you know Saraswati Puja holds a deeper significance? It is akin to West Bengal's own Valentine's Day, with young and older couples, often students, celebrating together. Girls elegantly don saris, and the atmosphere is filled with the beauty reminiscent of angels.
But you know for me this day is even more special. Because for me, this day is also a time for expressing immense gratitude for the opportunities of learning, knowledge, and education, particularly for women. The journey hasn't been easy for our predecessors.
Women were barred from having an education for a long time. The right to read, to learn, and to be educated is a precious gift that has been obtained through considerable pain and sacrifice.
And now, in this capitalistic world, education becomes a privilege, one denied to many children.
As I stood before the goddess, holding flowers and reciting hymns to invoke her blessings, I wished not only to acquire more knowledge but also to find ways to contribute to my country, society, and especially to those children who lack the means to access this invaluable gift of knowledge.
So, dear penpal, I hope you will be with me, supporting me on my humble quest. Together we will change this world, for the better.
Until next time dear penpal.
Wish you a very happy (although late) Valentine’s Day. Keep spreading love.
Yours truly,
Veenita
